About the Swiss Plateau (Mittelland)
- Population: around 5'000'000
- Language: German, French
- Major Cities: Zurich, Bern, Basel
Location
The Swiss Plateau, called "Mittelland" in German (meaning "Middle Land"), is located between the Jura and the Alps. It crosses Switzerland on the line Zurich-Bern.
It is separated in different parts by the rivers Aare, Reuss and Limmat.
Landscape
For ages, glaciers flew from the Alps into the Mittelland. They formed the little hills and the wide valleys.
Agriculture and a high population density are typic for this area.
Points of interest
Of course you should visit Zurich, Bern and Basel.
But apart of these cities, there are a lot of lovely little cities, such as Solothurn, Olten or Bremgarten which are worth being visited.
There is also something "like" the Niagra Falls, the Rheinfall near Schaffhausen, it is smaller but nontheless impressive.
History
400 B.C.
Colonisation by the Helvetics, a celtic group. -> Confoederatio Helvetica (CH), the latin name and car-sign of Switzeland are derivated of that.

after 1350

The Swiss Confederation declares independence from Germany.
1798
Napoleon Bonaparte occupies the Mittelland -> The Helvetic Republic, a french satelite state is formed, all swiss dominions become independent (-> several new Cantons are created)
